On The Verge

“On the Verge” reflects upon women’s growth within a world that often attempts to diminish or define their roles. Her oil paintings offer narratives of a diverse group of women in age, and perspectives - fusing their experiences with the urban landscape of New York. It’s subway and environs play a large role in Saluja’s work, at times becoming the subjects themselves. Embracing the tattered, gritty and textured elements of her native city, Saluja reimagines these spaces as sublime using a variety of brushwork from loose, chromatic drips and thick strokes, to more subdued and refined expressions of light flowing over form. Rather than portray an overly sanitized version of the city, she zeroes in on oxidation, rust, stains and cracks converting these details into meditative totems for the subjects of her paintings.
